Google says goodbye to SMS authentication

If you have a Gmail account, you’ll soon need to use a different method to prove to Google that you are who you say you are.

A big change is coming to the way Google verifies access to your Gmail account. Instead of getting a text message with a two-factor authentication code, you’ll soon need to scan a QR code, or use a passkey.

Tech expert Omar Gallaga says it’s all in the name of improved account security.

Highlights from this segment:

– You will have a few options for accessing your Gmail account – scan a QR code, use a passkey verified by your fingerprint or face, or use an authenticator app.

– It’s likely that these new security measures will roll out for other Google apps, like YouTube and Google Docs.

– Many other tech companies have done away with SMS-based codes as a means of authentication, because scammers can compromise phone numbers and hijack the codes to get access to user accounts.
