Greg Abbott Has Until Sunday To Sign Or Veto Legislation

This week in Texas politics with the Texas Tribune

Gov. Greg Abbott signed a slew of bills into law this week. Helping us narrow in on a few is Texas Tribune politics reporter Cassi Pollock.

Pollock tells Texas Standard that new gun legislation, including that permitless or “constitutional carry” of firearms, was among the bills Gov. Abbott signed with fanfare this week.

“That bill, now that it’s been signed, will go into effect September 1,” Pollock said.

Also taking effect then is an expansion of Texas’ Compassionate Use Program, which encompasses the state’s medical marijuana initiatives. While eligibility and THC potency was slightly expanded, the tweaks still fall “a little bit short” of what a lot of advocates had been looking for,” Pollock says.

Gov. Abbott faces a deadline Sunday to veto legislation – which could potentially include his vowed veto of funding for the Legislature.
