Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is asking President Donald Trump to issue a presidential disaster declaration, which would help Texas residents who are still recovering from tornadoes that struck in October.

A presidential disaster declaration would free up millions more federal dollars for people rebuilding in Dallas, as well as counties in South and Central Texas.

Jesus Jimenez covers weather and climate for The Dallas Morning News. He says Abbott’s Monday letter to Trump asked for a disaster declaration that’s needed in order for federal funds to be released to counties affected by last year’s tornadoes.

What you’ll hear in this segment:

– Which areas were affected by the Oct. 20 tornadoes

– Why Abbott’s request for a disaster declaration comes so long after the storms

– Why Texas is seeking federal funds, rather than using state dollars
