The FBI is investigating deaths in the Harris County Jail

A record number of people died while in custody last year.

The FBI has announced an investigation into two deaths in Harris County Jail.

Texas Tribune political reporter James Barragán notes the in-custody deaths are separated by two years – Jaquaree Simmons died in 2021, and Jacoby Pillow died last month. “One of those [deaths] was deemed to have involved the use of force,” he says. “I believe the other one is still under investigation. And so the FBI is now involved.”

The investigation comes after a record high of 27 deaths in Harris County jails last year, and at least four, including Pillow’s, so far this year.
