HD-28 Special Election Presents Bellwether In Race To Control Texas House

Democrats and Republicans alike view the contest in the diverse Fort Bend County district as a dry run for the larger prize in 2020.

Texas House District 28 in Fort Bend County has long been a reliably Republican seat. But as the population boomed over the past few years, the area shifted from dark red to pink. Then, incumbent representative Dr. John Zerwas resigned at the end of September. Now, seven candidates are vying for the seat in a special election.

Dr. Elizabeth Markowitz is the sole Democratic contender. The Republican field includes Dr. Anna AllredTricia KrenekGary GatesGary HaleClinton Purnell and Sarah Laningham.
