It’s time for the week that was in Texas politics with Alex Samuels, political reporter for The Texas Tribune.

Houston Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia is one of the seven impeachment managers appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The managers will prosecute the case against President Donald Trump in the Senate, most likely beginning next week. Garcia is a former state senator.

“Garcia was … the first Hispanic and the first woman to be elected in her own right to the Harris County Commissioners Court,” Samuels says.

Earlier this week, Gov. Greg Abbott opted Texas out of resettling refugees through the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program, drawing criticism from groups who work with people fleeing their home countries.

“Days after Abbott announced that decision, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration policy that allowed governors like Gov. Abbott to decide what to do with those refugees in the first place,” Samuels says.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spent last weekend touring Texas by bus as part of his presidential campaign, announced he will hire 37 staffers in the state, with a plan to ramp up to 150 be the end of January.
