If you have an office job, you probably attend your fair share of meetings – even though they may be happening on a screen instead of around a conference table. Tech expert Omar Gallaga says there are plenty of ways to make meetings more useful and even less frequent. He wrote about it recently in his Debugger column on Medium. Gallaga told Texas Standard that meetings can cost a lot of time and money.

“You show up. Everybody’s there. You’re spending work time together, and nothing gets done,” Gallaga said.

Highlights from this segment:

– One estimate found that $37 billion was wasted on unproductive meetings in a single year.

– Online calculators from GitHub and Harvard Business Review can show just how much meetings are costing your organization.

– If you only need to meet for a short time, consider an instant message or email conversation instead.

– Make meetings better by having a set agenda, adjourning early if possible and keeping the number of invitees to a minimum.
