How Will Denton Deal With New Fracking Law?

“Battle of the Bans”

Denton, the north Texas town where last November 59 percent of voters approved a fracking ban within city limits, was dealt a setback this week.

One of Governor Abbott’s first bills signed into law bars Texas cities from regulating oil and gas drilling – basically banning Denton’s ban on fracking.

But officials in Denton haven’t thrown in the towel yet. In an email to a reporter for UPI News, Lindsey Baker, a city spokeswoman, said, “We will certainly continue to enforce our current regulations to protect the health and safety of our residents, but we do not know how the operators or courts will react.”

Adam Briggle, president of the Denton Drilling Awareness Group and a leader in the Frack Free Denton effort, joins the Texas Standard to talk about what happens next.

More from the interview will be posted shortly.
