Humanoid robots face a rocky, expensive road to success

Building robots with arms, legs, and even faces is a dream for many tech entrepreneurs.

For many technologists who want to see more automation in factories, businesses and even homes, the humanoid robot is a major goal.

Startup companies, and even Elon Musk, want to build human-like devices that can help with manufacturing, as well as the drudgery of household tasks.

But if recent demos and current high price tags for humanoid robots are any indication, it will be a while before they join us at work and play. Tech expert Omar Gallaga says developers remain excited about the technology.

Highlights from this segment:

– A startup company called 1X started taking preorders for a $20,000 robot in October. Leasing options are also available.

– An equity fund that has invested in 1X announced recently that it would buy 10,000 Neo robots to place with other companies where it has invested.

– A demo of Elon Musk’s Optimus robot recently went wrong when the device toppled over, and when it appeared to mimic its human handlers’ movements as it attempted to remove a VR headset.
