In a recent San Antonio Express-News article, transgender San Antonian Ashley Smith said transgender people make up “about one in 300 people.” “We’re all over the place,” she said. “We’re your friends and your neighbors.”
A Facebook photo of Smith posing next to Gov. Greg Abbott went viral last month. She wrote below the photo: “How will the potty police know I’m transgender if the governor doesn’t?”
Smith told PolitiFact Texas that she came across the 1-in-300 ratio through data from the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law.
Is that a fact? Gardner Selby of the Politifact Texas fact-checking team has the answer.
Hear how Smith’s claim scored in the player above.
