State Sen. Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham) says Senate Bill 6 –Texas’ so-called “bathroom bill” – is not as restrictive as a similar North Carolina law which led some businesses to cancel events and expansion plans.

Is that a fact? Gardner Selby of the Politifact Texas fact-checking team has the answer.

Kolkhorst says the Texas bill is not as broad as North Carolina’s law. Though both measures ban transgender people from using a bathroom that does not correspond to the gender on their birth certificate, and restricts cities’ ability to pass laws that conflict with the ban, Kolkhorst says the Texas Privacy Act does not address worker wages or labor conditions. Nor does it prohibit filing a lawsuit alleging discrimination on the basis of biological sex. The North Carolina law does both, she says.
