“In small moments, people are so kind and will take care of other humans in need.”

Rhie Azzam Morris is finishing her degree in African-American History. But her story would make a memorable college application essay. Morris was a homeless youth, on and off for about six years.

Morris reached a low point while traveling with a hitchhiking partner in San Francisco. After a night of drinking, they got into an intense fight and Morris decided to walk away. But, intoxicated, she passed out. When she woke up, she found herself in a motel room in Oregon, with a note on the table and fifty dollars.

Luckily, it turned out that a couple – concerned for her safety – picked her up. “I was a girl alone on the side of the road,” she says. “They saved my life.”

Morris has been off the streets since June 2007. And in June 2017, she and her husband bought a house in Pflugerville.

Morris took a positive conclusion from her story. “I surprisingly learned that the world is really beautiful. In small moments, people are so kind and will take care of other humans in need,” she says.
