Last week, the Houston Chronicle released details of a report by the Texas Department of Public Safety. It wasn’t meant for the public’s eyes, but some of the issues in it have certainly captured the public’s interest. Among them, the apprehension of several foreign terrorists at the southern border, including members of Al-Shabab, the Somalia-based group once funded by Osama Bin Laden.
Brian Rosenthal, Austin bureau reporter for the Houston Chronicle, broke the story. He says the report was produced for state leaders.
“The information in it is for real. It is what was found by the agency, which is not a political agency, it’s a non-partisan agency, it’s a law-enforcement agency,” Rosenthal says.
“The question remains whether the report, which is focussed on anecdotes in that regard, offers strong enough evidence for what the political leaders have been saying about how common this is.”
Rosenthal says the report was leaked to the Chronicle by an unnamed source.
