Is physical media doomed?

LG has stopped selling Blu-ray players, and discs can sometimes be hard to come by even as streamers remove content from their services.

The South Korean tech giant LG announced last month that it would discontinue the two Blu-ray players it sells. LG is one of the last companies making and selling such players, as most people rely on streaming services to watch movies or TV shows.

Streaming remains dominant, despite recent controversies over streamers removing content from their platforms, leading some fans to take a renewed interest in physical media. Tech expert Omar Gallaga, who wrote about the potential death of discs for CNET, says you can still buy a Blu-ray player, but there are far fewer options than before.

Highlights from this segment:

– LG announced it will no longer sell Blu-ray or Ultra-HD players, leaving Sony and Panasonic alone in those markets.

– Retailers like Best Buy have stopped selling Blu-ray content in their stores.

– Many streaming services have removed older content, and even movies and shows that are more recent, that the service doesn’t believe make financial sense for them.
