“Life isn’t fair, but government must be.”

That’s one of several quotes from former Texas Gov. Ann Richard’s you might see popping up on banners across Texas. It’s also a favorite of Margaret Justus, founder of the Ann Richards Legacy Project. She served as Richards’ deputy press secretary from 1989-1994. Jusus says the idea for the “Ann banners” started in the state capital when the Downtown Austin Alliance approached her looking for a way to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Richards’ inauguration.

Because of the pandemic, the idea for an outdoor art exhibit was born. The banners, bearing different photographs and selected quotes, debuted in Austin in March, but they are now also up in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, with a set in the works for El Paso. One goal for Justus was to “inspire the next generation to remember Ann and her courage to lead.”
