Time for the week that was in Texas politics, with Alex Samuels, community reporter for the Texas Tribune.

A new Quinnipiac University poll gives Sen. Ted Cruz a nine-point lead over Congressman Beto O’Rourke in their race for U.S. Senate. Samuels says that this result mirrors another p\ll that was released in September. These and other polls are showing that Cruz’s lead could be stabilizing in the high single digits.

O’Rourke’s campaign has raised $38.1 million in the third quarter, tripling Cruz’s $12 million in the same period.

“$38.1 million – that is quite the haul. I think his campaign said it’s a record for any U.S. Senate candidate to raise in a single quarter,” Samuels says.

The voter registration deadline for the midterm election came and went this week, and, as of October 8, 15.6 million Texans registered to vote. That’s a jump from the March primaries, where 15.2 million voters were registered.
