“We have a tremendous field – the best in a generation – so I step aside knowing our party is in good hands, and as long as we listen to the grassroots, the cause of conservatism will be too.” Those were the parting words from former Texas Governor Rick Perry as he ended his second bid for the White House.
KUT’s political reporter Ben Philpott joins the Standard to talk about Perry’s exit, and what this means for the rest of the GOP hopefuls.
Philpott says Perry may be positioning himself as a Cabinet member.
“He was trying to talk about how to make government work in this country,” Philpott says. His resume was longer than most other candidates in the field, but he says that candidates at the top right now are outsiders without much public office experience.
“This race, as of right now, is about who is not going to be someone of Washington, someone from Washington,” he says.
