Friday is Juneteenth, the day enslaved people were finally freed in Texas. It came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. June 19, 1865 is often celebrated as the true end of slavery in the United States. To honor the day, Aaron “Fresh” Knight, one half of the duo that hosts KUTX’s “The Breaks,” shares a couple of live music streams to catch this weekend.

The Black Voices: A Listening Party
When: Saturday, June 20, 8 p.m. – 12 a.m.
Where: Far Out lounge, thewerd.co
Who: Benefiting the Austin Justice Coalition: Kalu and The Electric Joint, Magna Carda and Blackillac and more.
“Magna Carda, the duo of Megz Kelli and producer Dougie Do, bring you the smooth, jazz-infused, hip-hop sound reminiscent of ‘Jazzmatazz’ and the cool, scat rap era of the ’90s. Blackillac, also a duo, made a name for themselves separately and then formed a duo – like a two-headed Voltron. They bring the very high-energetic raps to the stage. Certainly get the crowd hype; they’ve been all over the country creating a name for themselves.”
