Setting A New Standard, Texas Style

In the 21st century, as Texas goes, so goes the rest of the nation?

Many think so – and not just Texans. As a Time magazine cover story proclaimed, “it’s not an accident that three of the five fastest growing cities are in Texas. It’s more like destiny.”

Perfect timing, it would seem, for public radio’s first daily news program from Texas, for Texas and beyond: Texas Standard.

Produced by KUT Public Media in Austin, Texas Standard is a partnership between KUT, Dallas’ KERA, Houston Public Media and San Antonio’s Texas Public Radio. Other partner organizations around the state – including the Texas Tribune, Texas Monthly and many others – round out our stable of contributors, as well as news organizations across the United States and Mexico.

Hosted by veteran public radio journalist David Brown (Marketplace, Monitor Radio), the program is conceived as a fast-paced hour covering breaking news, business and money, politics, life and culture: whatever’s generating buzz across Texas, no matter where the news is happening. With plans to broadcast daily in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and smaller towns across Texas, Texas Standard is both a news show without borders, and an unapologetically distinctive Texas perspective.

As we like to say, no matter where you are, you’re on Texas Standard time.

Listen to our brief conversation with Stewart Vanderwilt, Director and General Manager of KUT Austin:

We’ll be telling you more as we near our January 2015 launch. But for now, we hope you’ll enjoy this sneak peek at our most recent test runs – done in “real time”.

A new, real-time episode is being created each week. You can listen to them all on Soundcloud.

We’re working hard behind the scenes to put the pieces together.  It’s a work in progress – and we’d love to get your feedback. Thanks for checking us out, and as they say in radio, stay tuned!
