Shave And A Haircut? How Texas Barbers And Stylists Are Preparing For Reopening.

Under an order from Gov. Greg Abbott, salons and barbershops can reopen Friday if they take certain precautions.

Earlier this week, two Texas state reps went to a Houston barbershop for haircuts. It was an apparent act of civil disobedience, and a way to send a message to fellow Republican, Gov. Greg Abbott, to reopen hair salons and barbershops. That same day, Abbott announced such businesses would be allowed to reopen with limited service starting Friday – days earlier than previously planned, according to The Texas Tribune.

Abbott’s decision was surprising to many professionals in the industry. But Ron Jemison, presiding officer of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation Advisory Board on Barbering, told Texas Standard host David Brown on Thursday that many were also eager to get back to work.

“I think it kind of made everybody buckle down and understand this is serious, so we’ve got to make sure everybody’s buildings are up to par and ready to go,” Jemison said.
