Residents in Dallas have been complaining that police response times are just too slow. Data released by the Dallas Police Department confirms this sentiment, showing response times to the highest priority calls to be around the eight minutes, when back in 2012, they hovered over six minutes. While Chief David Brown from the Dallas department says slower response times are part of better training, some officers paint a different picture. They claim they’re being prevented from doing the job to the fullest of their abilities, and that it’s also taking a toll.
In fact, some officers say it is just one part of a growing problem: Morale, it seems, is at an all time low and causing many officers to jump ship to more competitive departments.
Michael Mata,e Vice President of the Dallas Police Association, spoke to the Standard to address some of the reasons why morale is low.
