Vaccine Rollout and Preventing the Next Pandemic

At this point in the fight against COVID-19, vaccine supply appears to outstrip demand. Meanwhile, new CDC guidelines say fully vaccinated people can resume life as normal without social distancing or masks. Are we at an inflection point when it comes to how the nation and the world is responding to this pandemic? To answer our questions we’ve brought in one of Texas’ and the nation’s top immunology experts: Dr. Peter Hotez, author and co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

 Tim Duncan Joins Basketball Hall of Fame

Tim Duncan will be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame this weekend. The San Antonio Spurs legend amassed five NBA championships, two Most Valuable Player awards, and made the playoffs every year of his 19 year career with the Spurs. Texas Public Radio’s Dan Katz reports Duncan is being celebrated in San Antonio for his work ethic, humble nature, unorthodox style, and all the joy he brought to the city.

Texas Business Tax Breaks

Texas’ Chapter 313 program greatly reduces taxes for companies’ big corporate projects, and it’s up for renewal by the Texas Legislature. Yesterday, we talked about how the tax deferral hits Texas  school districts. Today, Houston Chronicle reporter Mike Morris joins us to share how much the 313 program costs everyday Texans.

Gambling in Texas

Once again, state lawmakers have filed proposals to bring casinos to Texas. And once again, those proposals likely won’t gain much traction. Still, Texas has a strong connection with gambling, as KERA’s Galilee Abdullah explains.
