Nothing is private once it’s posted on the internet, but social media users, especially in the U.S., expect to have the freedom to post almost anything they want. Now, the federal government wants access to accounts, search histories and other information from those filing to immigrate to the U.S.

Digital savant Omar Gallaga of 512 Tech, powered by the Austin American Statesman, says that though a federal register announcement indicates that the U.S. government wants to be able to monitor the social media activities of immigrants who hold green cards, as well as naturalized citizens, it’s still unclear how far the feds will go to access this information.

What you’ll hear in this segment:

–What the government can learn from social media accounts

–Whether there are current restrictions on social media activities of those who want to be admitted into the country

–How immigrants can protect their social media information
