Elizabeth Crook’s new book “The Which Way Tree” is about two siblings – a white boy and his younger half-sister who’s half-black – living in Texas during the Civil War. When a mountain lion comes to their homestead and attacks the girl, her mother comes to her rescue as her brother witnesses the attack helplessly. It all takes place against a backdrop of the war.
