This Austin Seventh-Grader Joined Pfizer’s Vaccine Trials So Life Can ‘Go Back To Normal’

The sounds of Texas.

Thirteen-year-old Lucy Farrow was one of the first young Texans to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. She had participated in Pfizer’s vaccine study trials on 12- to 15-year olds – something for which she says she was excited to volunteer.

Farrow, who is a seventh-grader, and three of her friends participated in the trials.

“I was part of the vaccine study trial; I really wanted to do it!”

She felt she was a good candidate, for one thing, because she isn’t afraid of needles. Also, she thought it would give her the chance to see her friends sooner.

“So we could, like, actually, hang out together sooner! And I hope things go back to normal.”

She’s proud of her contribution to the scientific effort to fight COVID-19, but isn’t so sure she and other trial participants will be remembered for what they did.

“If I’m being honest, I don’t think people are going to remember this because when we look at other vaccines we don’t really think of the people who that was tested on. So, I don’t think so. But maybe, because this is such a big event and so many people have died from this, and it’s just, like, changed everybody’s lives so many different ways – maybe people will think that. I hope they do.”

Farrow’s 9-year-old sister wants to be part of the ongoing Pfizer trials for younger children, and their parents are OK with that.
