Suri Bacon is 11 and lives in Austin. She knows the Battle of the Alamo, in the 1800s, was between Texas and Mexico. When she learned about slavery, she learned how Texas was different from the North.

“They always told us that in the South, Texas had slaves, but in the North, they didn’t,” she says. “I also think of slavery when I think about Texas history.”
