Texas proposes dementia research initiative

Dementia research is the focus of a Texas legislative initiative announced this week by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. Patrick said the state-funded initiative will be called the Dementia Prevention Research Institute of Texas. The creation of such an initiative would make Texas a leading center for medical research on dementia, building on the model of a similar Texas program to combat cancer, the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas.

For more on the initiative we’re joined by Olivia Aldridge, health care reporter at our home station KUT News.

Program to train veterans to become teachers coming to an end

A Department of Defense program that’s helped thousands of veterans become teachers is about to end. A government audit found the Pentagon failed to support and promote the “Troops To Teachers” program, even though advocates say it benefited both veterans and public schools.

How news organizations are partnering with public libraries

With the ubiquity of the internet and social media, where and how people get their information has shifted, and news outlets – including Texas Standard – spend a lot of time thinking about how to connect with users effectively. It can be a tricky goal to achieve.

As part of a project with the University of Texas at Austin School of Information, the Texas Standard’s Sarah Asch looked into one way news organizations are approaching this issue: partnerships with public libraries.

Program encourages anglers to share data on the lunkers they hook

Each year, anglers across the state have the opportunity to contribute data to Texas Parks and Wildlife by catching a whopper. It’s called the ShareLunker program, and its goal is to help produce bigger, better fish. The program runs all year long, starting in January.

Natalie Goldstrohm, ShareLunker program coordinator, joins the Standard to talk about the program.

Cooler temps in Texas means it’s time for trout

It’s getting a little easier in Texas to enjoy the great outdoors now that temperatures are finally starting to drop. Anglers know that the drop in temperature also means it’s time for trout season.

Rainbow trout are a popular sport fish, but they can’t survive Texas’ hot months. So when it cools off, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department stocks ponds and lakes across the state them.

Carl Kittel, director of fish hatcheries for TPWD, joins us to go over the initiative.
