President Donald Trump sent several members of his administration to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week to talk about artificial intelligence, or AI. Michael Kratsios, chief technology officer of the United States, and Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, told tech industry leaders that the administration intends to pursue a policy of relaxed regulation when it comes to AI. Autonomous cars, voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and systems that provide facial recognition all use AI.
Tech expert Omar Gallaga says that while the light-touch regulation message was welcomed by many tech companies, critics say it could be problematic as the U.S. deals with Europe and China’s burgeoning AI industries, and as American companies work to figure out the limits and opportunities of AI.
