Typewriter Rodeo: Back To School, From The Teacher’s Perspective

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Kids and their parents are busily shopping and preparing for a new school year. But the teachers they’ll meet in their classrooms have been hard at work for awhile, getting things ready, enjoying a few moments of stillness.

Back To School, From The Teacher’s Perspective

the pencils are sharpened

desks all in a row

curriculum tightened

room wrapped with a bow

the quiet, so lovely

as anticipation

grows for the end

of their summer vacation

(not mine, despite what

some people think

we work all year long

that’s why teachers drink)

but this still sweet moment

the kids not yet here

just might be my favorite

part of the year

so I take a deep breath

for all that school brings

and try not to run screaming

when that first bell rings…
