Typewriter Rodeo: Cabin Fever

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Some folks might usually be on a summer trip this time of year, visiting friends or family, or at least taking advantage of summer activities such as going to the community pool. Those options are fewer this year. Instead, many are spending extra time at home. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Cabin Fever

We’ve pruned our shrubs so they look like people

We’ve trained our chickens to dance

We’ve cut up strips of old t-shirts

Woven hopeful messages into our fence

We’ve taught ourselves to bake loaves of bread

Sourdough, challah, hamburger buns

We’ve ripped the labels off our spices

What a challenge (that was not cinnamon)

We’re doing okay, overall I think

Though the cat somehow has a shaved back

We’re embracing art – the dog’s the Mona Lisa

And I’m a masterpiece by Jackson Pollack

Who knows how long we’ll be like this

Hopefully not many more months

But regardless, I think we’re feeling it

The birth of the super weird

COVID Renaissance
