Typewriter Rodeo: Capital Bar Conversations

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Work at the Texas State Capitol building can get contentious. Partisan disputes and back-hallway wheeling and dealing can leave one feeling a little exhausted at the end of the day — or whenever the lege wraps up. Sometimes what you need is a visit to the bar down the street.

                    it’s dark

                    it’s dark

        everyone is very

            thirsty

       for conversation

     (and more?)

      we are all friends

       in the dark bar

         hidden down the stairs

         slung across the street

from the home of the Lepe

we all have so much in common

        in the black shadows

where we can laugh and deal

        and remember we aren”t enemies

         (even if we aren”t friends)

     and so maybe

there should be more dark bars

     hidden underground

  where friend and foe

    where rep and influencer

can meet

    and drink

   and chat

     and work

        toward a better

                       brighter

                                future
