Typewriter Rodeo: COVID Cabin Fever

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

The months of limited travel and social gatherings during the pandemic have meant more time at home and, for many, more time in the kitchen. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Cabin Fever On Preheat 350

They tell us we should still be
doing something write the poem

about your father this time
this time tell us how sad you really are

about the heaviness of lonliness
but make it pretty cut the lines

in two plant some succulents
on your front porch see, you’re still

alive bake banana bread & chocolate
chip cookies & sourdough bread we are

all still working so, I write
about how the word heavy is not enough

and I bake banana bread & I defrost
chicken to feed myself for the next 3 days

and from my kitchen window I watch the deer,
on their hindlegs, reaching for leaves.
