Typewriter Rodeo: Early Morning Haze

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Students across Texas are headed back to class. Parents and caretakers are readjusting to the school schedule. Everyone is figuring out how to get enough sleep with the new demands. That was the inspiration of this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Early Morning Haze

while taking break, an early escape
before the dawn light broke, somehow i awoke
who was there to greet me on the street, i see
glow of a school bus
glazed over eyes and quiet hugs
parents left standing on corners
i couldn’t quite make out the expressions

sadness? exhaustion? elation? perhaps all 3

I slowly drove the street
hoped to myself that they were able to
go back to sleep…
