Typewriter Rodeo: El Niño

Each week, the Texas Standard is reaching out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on a relevant headline or topic.

Communities across the state are still recovering from the Memorial Day floods brought on by El Niño. That was the inspiration for Typewriter Rodeo’s David Fruchter this week.

El Niño

so much dry

and then the sky

opens

all the water

all at once

like the kind of love

you wished for so hard

needed so bad

but then when you got it

it was more than you could take

too much too intense

the entire house

of your heart

washed away

not everyone survived

and there’s more rain to come.
