Typewriter Rodeo: Exercising In August

Each week, the Texas Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on a relevant headline or topic.

It’s hot. Heck, it’s always hot in August in Texas. Yet, somehow, many of us still manage to lace up our shoes and hit the hot asphalt for a walk, run or bike ride. That was the inspiration for this week’s Typewriter Rodeo poem by Sean Petrie.

EXERCISING IN AUGUST

Why oh why

Did I decide to do it?

My feet are on fire

But I’ll push through it

The ground is baked dust

The sun is on HIGH

And I’m sweating from my head

To the top of my thigh

I hope it’s worth it

To lose a few pounds

And I feel a bit, dizzy…

Should I just turn around?

Now my vision is hazy

But I’m gonna keep going

Man, I should’ve brought water

And the world, is it slowing?

But the trail is all mine

There’s no about

I just hope someone finds me

When I

Pass out.
