Typewriter Rodeo: Farewell 2020

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

By Naomi Shihab NyeDecember 18, 2020 1:03 pm,

It has been a bit of a rough year. Some might say, “dumpster fire.” This Typewriter Rodeo poem is a (not-so-fond) farewell.

Farewell 2020

We’re so glad to see you go.
We’re sweeping you out the door.
Bring a bulldozer.
We’ll roll you over,
two seconds flat.
Pummel your crazy zeroes,
trick your twos out of business.

You scared me from the get-go,
promising perfect vision, all that.
Those of us who never had
perfect vision felt skeptical
from the start.

We’ll burn you with our matches.
We’ll singe you with our pain.
Begone! Give us a one
for the morrow.
