Typewriter Rodeo: Hail In Texas

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

“Hail in Texas”

the sky is the color
of your face
after too many Lone Stars
and too many margaritas
the roiling clouds
the wind bent trees
mean something
is brewing
something is looming
something is heading your way
best park the car in the garage
and get the insurance number handy
cause the baseballs about to be lobbed
are not the kind on opening day
but are still the kind
to smash their way
through everything
everything
because it’s Texas
and it’s springtime
and the sky looks like
a college Sunday morning
and it’s about to start
flinging hail stones
like prayers
during TX-OU
it’s about to get real up in here
stand back from the windows
and revel
in that show
from an obviously Texan God
