Typewriter Rodeo: Lone Star Playlist

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Texas has inspired many a singer-songwriter. So if you’re traveling across the state, you might consider listening to what others have seen on those wide-open roads. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Lone Star Playlist

if you are privileged to take a drive

across this expanse of a state

don’t you neglect to queue up some Willie

and Waylon, if it’s not too late

some Ornette, some Buddy, some Queen Beyonce

some Lyle and some Lucinda too

some Jimmie Dale, some Jerry Jeff, and Billie Joe

Selena, and Janis sany true

Stevie Ray, Jimmie, and Robert Earl

Lihhtnin’ and T-bone, Sir Doug

nowadays you can just load them all

on your phone

no hundred CDs must you lug

Erykah and Flaco, Roky and Sly

Augie and Ernest and Ray

there’s enough Texas music for your whole roadtrip

even if it takes ten days

long Texas days
