Typewriter Rodeo: Lowtalkers

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Everyone has an accent, especially Texans. But some people also have an extra layer of unique speech: the lowtalkers. They were the inspiration for Typewriter Rodeo’s Sean Petrie as he wrote this week’s poem.

Lowtalkers

I once went on a date

With a superfast lowtalker

I asked what she did

For a living

And she told me she was

An unsurlyfrankfella

Which

After much thought

I translated to

University bank teller

When she ordered her dinner

She mumbled pigsfeetwelldone

Which I whispered to the water

Meant – some beef Wellington

And on and on it went

Lowtalking

Translating

Second-guessing

Every second

And some times I get it right

Sometimes – not a clue

And even

After all these years

I’m still not sure

If she really said – “I do”
