Typewriter Rodeo: Musicians From Lubbock

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

We think of Austin as Texas’ music capital, but hundreds of miles away, a creative wind has swirled around Lubbock for decades, giving us some of Texas’s most venerated musicians.

Musicians From Lubbock

there must be some kind

of magic fountain

or wizard school

something in the air or the water

(not that there’s much of the latter

in that dry, dusty town

up toward panhandle way)

maybe the stars just shine there

with a particular brightness

on long, lonely nights

but for one little place

to have given us so many gifts

Buddy Holly and Lloyd Maines

Angela Strehli and Jesse Taylor

Waylon, of course

and all three of the Flatlanders,

Butch, Joe and Jimmy

something’s going on there for sure

and none of those amazing musicians

seems to want to tell us

just what that might be

but one thing they all seem to agree on:

Lubbock is a fine place

to be from
