Typewriter Rodeo: Never Read The Comments!

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

It’s never been easier to share opinions – political or trivial – with the public. Sometimes those opinions inspire productive, civil conversations, and other times…well, it’s just safer to adhere to the motto of the internet.

“Never read the comments!”

this is an interesting article
you think
I will read it
you think
It WAS interesting
you think
did other people also think
it was interesting
you think
and so you do the thing
you should never do
you scroll down
your curiosity betraying you
and afterward
you feel dirty
sullied
worried for mankind
you’ve forgotten the interesting article
you’ve forgotten your curiosity
because your brain
your soul
is now a blackened shell
NEVER READ THE COMMENTS
you think
by god, I will remember
next time
