Typewriter Rodeo: New Life

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

With everything going on in the world, the simplest and, yet, most miraculous thing is also still happening: new life is joining us. This Typewriter Rodeo poem was requested by a Texas Standard listener.

New Life

You, all bundle of joy
all soft skin & hiccup
all new life coming shining light
You, in your first breath
have taken mine away
& I am now breathing new
You, small cry wonder –
it is so easy to love a thing
that has formed inside a warm belly.
I hope you know my voice.
I hope you remember it from all the times
I sang you songs and said i love &
goodnight &
when I whispered so only you could hear
in the nest of my belly:
I can’t wait to meet you
