Typewriter Rodeo: New Year’s Resolutions

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

New Year’s Resolutions

A unique chance
To bring about the new
Endless confetti showers
For the person you are about to become
Watching the calendar flip,
You begin to think,
“Maybe I could too!”

A somersault, handstand, or even a cartwheel
Taking you to places you’ve yet to explore
A shiny talent is just around the corner
And ambition and motivation know no bounds!

With fervent excitement
And uninterrupted joy
A dream emerges of this rebirth
“Yes, yes! It’s going to happen!”
This year it finally will
Or maybe the next, or the next, or the next
But so what if it never does?

Because the you you are
Is just as grand
As the you you’re fixated on becoming
And the real joy of the new year
Is reveling in the wishes
And holding on to the excitement of beginning
