Typewriter Rodeo: No Mask?… No Mask!

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Don your face paint, costumes and masks for Halloween, but don’t forget that it’s not always movie monsters or villains that are the scariest ghouls to haunt our waking days.

No Mask?… No Mask!

this Halloween i think i’ll be

something really scary

like a sudden allergy

to wheat or eggs or dairy

or a knock upon the door

and when you go to answer

someone from a cause you love

says “please give what you can sir”

i’ll be a wave of social change

that they’re forced to abide

i might dress like a government

department that’s been gutted

or damning proof, that gets tweeted

of with whom last night you rutted

so many costume choice there

so many fears to be

but none so very terrifying

as being

the real

me
