Typewriter Rodeo: One Race Done

Each week, the Texas Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on a relevant headline or topic.

Former Texas Governor Rick Perry has dropped out of the campaign for the Republican nominee for president. So what happens now? That was the inspiration for this week’s Typewriter Rodeo poem by Jodi Egerton.

ONE RACE DONE

And with that,

He packs up his garment bag

Of patriotic ties

And finely pressed pants

Heads back to the ranch

To reassess

And maybe, a breeze of disappointment

Whooshes through his meticulously coiffed hair

As he bids farewell to campaign staff

Drivers, caterers, and speech writers

But oh,

Can you picture the deep breath

He’ll take

Once the dust has settled

And the media moves on

And he can just sit down

Stop worrying about

Eating corndogs

And hugging babies

And just go back to being a Texan.
