Typewriter Rodeo: Overburdened Teachers

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

The school year is now well underway. Routines are set. If things seem to be moving smoothly, we have teachers to thank. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Overburdened Teachers

They must be parent-like
friend-like
stern but kind
They must be creative with their
lesson plans
yet focused on test scores
They must work tirelessly
during the school day
& then work hours more
There’s papers to grade
there’s curriculum to finesse
Honestly, there’s just no time left
for rest
Everyone has that favorite teacher
the one who made you feel seen
Why can’t we repay that priceless debt
by seeing them, acknowledging the hurt
Or, you know, literally pay them

What is our childrens’ futures worth?
