Typewriter Rodeo: Perry ‘Getting Over the Oops’

Each week, Texas Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on a relevant topic or headline.

By Laura RiceFebruary 20, 2015 10:19 am,

Since leaving the governor’s mansion after 14 years and 61 days in office, Rick Perry takes on his next challenge: getting over some of the “oops” moments he collected over his tenure.

Typewriter Rodeo’s David Fruchter calls upon the blunders of ex-governor Rick Perry to inspire this week’s poem.

GETTING OVER THE OOPS

Everybody makes mistakes,

But not everyone’s on a stage.

Their oopses and uhs preserved for posterity,

a symbol of our mediated age.

You would hope that our leaders would be more bug-free,

but your hopes would be diluted.

Two out of three isn’t bad they say,

but it was not to Rick’s speech they alluded.

IQ is not important – or so we’ve been told.

Indictments are, likewise, no big deal.

A pair of nerd glasses and you’re in the clear,

for another spin of the big wheel.
