Typewriter Rodeo: Pups

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

From the pandemic to the winter freeze to the political divisions and societal reckonings, it’s been a challenging period on so many fronts. The inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo is the promise that something can grow from what looks long past hope.

Pups

Outside in the yard
there’s a stalk
beige and bending
in a sad, slight way,
a relic of the days
of ice and snow
so much frozen water
yet not a drop
in the house,
this dead stalk
like a faded hint
of that one haunting
dream
that one memory
begging to be excised
easy to walk past
but less easy
to dive into
this beige and bending stalk
I went outside to chop
until I noticed
its succulent pups
brand new,
green stalks
peeking out
daring the world
daring me
daring memory
to smile
and hope
and remember what it’s like
for good dreams
happy things
to triumph
from extremes
