Typewriter Rodeo: Queso

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Texans love their queso. That was the inspiration for Typewriter Rodeo’s David Fritcher as he wrote this week’s poem.

Queso

this pot of gold
comes at the beginning

the drippiest, creamiest
bowl of delight

dip one tortilla chip,
and you’ll end up singing

the praises of queso
mouth full of next bite

dripping and oozing
down your chin and shirt

some hipsters catch it
in their beards

finally scraping
with fingers and spoons

the last few congealed smears

queso may be
the best thing about Texas

and that sure is saying a lot

so if you see me licking
the bowl or your shirt

it’s just because you missed a spot
