Typewriter Rodeo: Running

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

The Typewriter Rodeo takes requests — and this one came from a Texas Standard listener training for a marathon.

RUNNING (for Stefany)

You start out

With those feet fresh and springy

Raedy to take on

Even the toughest trail

And you hit that first

I

Slow it up

Just a bit

But still brimming

With strong-step strength

And so it goes

Incline and decline

Straightaway and curve

Breath getting as short

As your stride

And sure

Yes

You could

stop

Catch that breath

And recharge

Or —

You can lean in

Crank up that running fight song

On your playlist

And realize that you’ve got it —

That strength

To always take

Just one more

Step.
